From New Zealand, a distinctly tropical looking tree with massive leaves which can reach up to 50cm in length, Very tolerant of both wind and salt so another good choice for a coastal microclimate where it needs to be kept frost free. Can also be grown as a container plant and moved under cover for the winter months to avoid any frost.
Sow on good quality sterile seed compost and cover the seeds with vermiculite. Keep moist but not wet at around 20C to 24C. Germination in 4+ weeks. Germination results can benefit from cold scarification of around 4 weeks prior to sowing - mix the seeds with some damp vermiculite and put in a sealed container in a fridge at around 4C, and then remove the seeds and follow the guidance as above.
