Germination instructions

These large seeds can be tricky to germinate without special treatment.

One method to improvde germination rates is to remove the outer shell. Firstly soak the seeds for around 24 hours. Then crack open the seed ideally with one sharp blow. One way to do this is to use a bench vice slowly squeezing the shell until it suddenly cracks open then prizing it apart by hand.

Take out the endosperm kernel and place it in a sterile mixture of gritty seed compost and plant in separate small pots (clay is best) that will ensure that they do not get disturbed during early growth. Just cover the seed with a little sand and water with a fungicidal mixture.

Place in a propagator or similar environment with bottom heat where high humidity can be maintained at 25c to 30c. The baggy method works well if not using a propagator. Once germinated place them in good light and leave for about a year before potting on.
