The American persimmon, Diospyros virginiana is native to eastern North America. The small plum like fruits are sweet and edible when ripe. A small to medium sized tree to 18 metres with a round-topped crown of crooked branches and totally frost hardy. Seed grown plants produce both male and female trees.

Germination instructions

Sow in a good quality seed compost and cover with vermiculite/grit. Keep initially at 3°C to 5°C for 3 mnths, then 15°C. Germination 1 - 6 mnths. Pot up young seedlings as soon as large enough to handle into fairly deep pots. Give winter protection in the first 2 years.
