Found from Southern Mexico to the southern parts of the US, Soncoya forms a small tree in it's native habitat and is grown primarily for it's spikey fruit which has orange flesh and is edible.  Requires plenty of heat and a minimum of 10C in the winter months, so best grown in a heated greenhouse or conservatory. 

Soak seed for 24 hours, then sow in a well draining sterile seed compost, covering with vermiculite. Germination best at 25C to 30C, 1 - 2 months but erratic.
